Campus of Virtual Education (COVE)
The UDS Virtual Campus is designed to provide a digital space for students, staff and faculty to meet, teach and create a unique campus. The campus is not intended to be a replica of the CloudHouse in Potsdam, Babelsberg, but an independent, futuristic place that represents the future of digital teaching and serves as a source of inspiration.
In addition to fully digital lectures, the advantages of a VR environment will be used for teaching content, e.g. in the form of 3D labs. Students will also be able to participate in the digital campus by customising their own rooms with 3D assets and collaborating on future study projects in 3D space.
The design of the virtual campus will consist of futuristic buildings built on a high cliff overlooking the sea. As there are no financial or physical limits in virtual space, the design of the virtual UDS also reflects a corresponding courage to adopt new construction methods. Accordingly, the university buildings are designed to be open in order to make university life visible to the students and to create a sense of learning together. The wide view of the sea from each building is also intended to create a place of inspiration and contrast with the usual university buildings, which are rather functional. From a study space in a library (which is usually hard to come by), students tend to look at the next building wall rather than at the vastness of the surrounding nature. This will be a thing of the past on the virtual campus! There will be enough space for all students to engage with the course content, alone or in study groups, in inspiring locations around the campus.
The first four main campus buildings will be completed this year: A lecture hall, a library, a food court and student dormitories. The Lecture Hall will host digital lectures and seminars and will also provide space for digital events and conferences. The library will provide a digital getaway for students to study or collaborate on projects. In the food court, it will be possible to talk to others about more than just the content of the last lecture and provide important possibilities to network. Each UDS student will also have their own dormitory, which can be customized and used as a space to develop and test their own virtual ideas. The campus will be expanded in the future with new buildings and student projects, providing new incentives to explore the virtual world.
